The Future City Competition is a non-profit national competition sponsored by the engineering community to promote technological literacy and engineering to middle school students. Students also learn life skills such as problem solving, teamwork, research, written and verbal communication, computer literacy, and gain an increased awareness of community related issues.
The competition consists of five phases:
- Develop a project plan
- Write an Essay and Abstract about the City
- Make a physical model slide show
- Create a City presentation video
- Participate in Q&A session with a panel of engineer judges through Zoom
In 2013, the New Mexico region was awarded by the National program. Since then, 1,300+ students have participated in the competitions!
2022-2023 Theme
Climate Change

Today’s cities are designed for the long-term average temperatures and weather patterns specific to their region. But climates around the world are not following past weather patterns; they are changing. Researchers have found that the global average temperature has increased by about 1.8°F from 1901 to 2016.
Engineers, scientists, and city planners are helping cities prepare for climate change through adaption and mitigation. What will future cities look like if today’s cities begin to adapt to climate change and install mitigation strategies to combat climate change?
The teams’ challenge: Choose a climate change impact and design one innovative and futuristic climate change adaption and one mitigation strategy to keep your residents healthy and safe.
More information is available in the Future City handbook.
