New Mexico Regionals

The Future City Competition is a non-profit national competition sponsored by the engineering community to promote technological literacy and engineering to middle school students. Students also learn life skills such as problem solving, teamwork, research, written and verbal communication, computer literacy, and gain an increased awareness of community related issues.

The competition consists of three phases:
1) Design a city on the computer using the SIM City software.
2) Write an Essay and Abstract about the city.
3) Make a scale model of the city and present your city to a panel of engineer judges on the day of the competition.

In 2013, the New Mexico region was awarded by the National program. Since then, 1,300+ students have participated in the competitions!

2019-2020 Theme

Clean Water: Tap Into Tomorrow!

We turn on the faucet and clean water flows. Most of us don’t give it much thought. But for civil engineers, urban planners, developers, and other professionals, maintaining a reliable water supply takes expertise, planning and constant vigilance. A water-resilient city must be prepared to address a wide range of risks, including drought, flooding, population change, natural and man-made disasters and economic recession.

The teams’ challengeChoose a threat to your city’s water supply and design a resilient system to maintain a reliable supply of clean water.

More information is available in the program handbook.
